Where’s your favourite spot?

“Stories from the Red Chair” is from a series of embroideries sparked by seeing the Renaissance Exhibition at the AGO in Toronto.

I began working from drawings of my favourite everyday objects. I then incorporated a narrative within the embroidery. This shares the history of the chair and includes patterns and colours inspired by the exquisite decorative letters I had seen.

Many years ago I was up north and happened upon an auction barn where I found this chair. I loved it’s shape and feel despite it’s very dated 70’s brown floral coat. On the roof of the car it went and back home to Toronto.

My very talented upholsterer Carl transformed it with much skill and red velvet.

Over the years, my kids were nursed and read to there.  I’ve spent many hours enjoying a tea break, chat and a good book.

It’s recently moved back into my studio, it’s my favourite spot to sit and stitch, read, relax and take comfort in all the memories it holds.
