Sketchbook, where to start ?

Have you always wanted to try keeping a sketchbook?  Unsure where to start or felt you just don’t have time?  I’m hoping these steps will encourge you to begin your own creative path now.

1 Schedule in 10 minutes every day, make it part of your routine.  Use a mid sized sketchbook or notebook to start.  I like ring bound because I can open up the page fully.

2 Turn off everything, phones, media, any distractions, close them out.

3 Keep things simple to start, I love drawing with a 4B pencil for heavier lines and a 2H when I want finer delicate lines. Use what is on hand, add to your supplies as you can.

4 Reach out of your comfort zone when you feel ready or stuck. Try drawing with a variety of mediums. Add colour one at a time. Vary the scale of drawing within your sketchbook by drawing ‘frames’ to work within.

5 Keep a list of ideas to try, mediums, materials and subjects on the back pages.  Keep everything in a tote or box ready to dip into.  Remember why you are doing this, to explore your own creativity, to play and have fun!

I love this part of my daily routine. I’m honing my drawing skills while giving myself time to play and grow without expectations.

Here’s to a creative 2020!
